Practicing in the tree industry over 50 years, I am a Certified Arborist of the International Society of Arborculture #PD0055 and member of the American Society of Consulting Arborists #358 and currently working on two important committees: certifications of the Tree Worker and Southeastern Pa IPM Research Group which are directed toward the improvement of the quality of tree care on your property, in our area, and the industry at large.
The main reasons for pruning ornamental and shade trees include safety, health, and aesthetics. In addition, pruning can be used to stimulate fruit production and increase the value of timber. Pruning for safety involves removing branches that could fall and cause injury or property damage, trimming branches that interfere with lines of sight on streets or driveways, and removing branches that grow into utility lines. Safety pruning can be largely avoided by carefully choosing species that will not grow beyond the space available to them, and have strength and form characteristics that are suited to the site.
Pruning for health involves removing diseased or insect-infested wood, thinning the crown to increase airflow and reduce some pest problems, and removing crossing and rubbing branches. Pruning can best be used to encourage trees to develop a strong structure and reduce the likelihood of damage during severe weather. Removing broken or damaged limbs encourages wound closure.
Al Cherry Tree Service Inc. strives to reduce the use of pesticides in our environment. We primarily use Horticulture Oil and Insecticidal Soaps to control insect populations in trees and shrubs. In the winter we spray trees and shrubs with an anti-desiccant to help protect the plants and reduce winter burn. If you see a small, localized area in your trees and shrubs that seems affected by either disease or insect, prune out the branch(es) and dispose of them for hygiene. If you are unable to prune the plants yourself, call us and an ISA Certified Arborist will assess the situation and give you an estimate for recommended treatment. We will consider not only the tree in question but also its surroundings, taking into account its location, soil, and mulch, water table and many more cultural aspects of landscaping. We look for symptoms while trying to find the root cause of the problem to help keep your trees and shrubs healthy in the future.
